Re: German Veterinary Gear

I think that it used to be pretty common to use blinders to calm horses. Muleskinners used them on the mules to keep them quiet while packing the saddle. I'd love to see picks of some of the veterinary gear that you got. A while back I was trying to research German veterinary saddlebags, as the US A...

Re: McClellan saddletree dimensional changes

I had always assumed that the narrower gullet in the trees was due to the decision by the Quartermaster Corps to breed remounts with more Thoroughbred in them, presumably producing a somewhat narrower, higher withered animal. I'm surprised, then, that there isn't a record of an ordered change in the...

Re: Saddle Bags

I thought that it looked odd as well, probably because the center strap is obscured. I guess, as Rick said, that they are standard '04 bags. The two things rolled in the center appear to be surcingles. I'm guessing, with the presence of two feed bags and sets of spare shoes, that this represents the...

Here's a pic of LTC Olstead, O'Ryan's Chief of Staff. He's wearing a flapped Audley. (Maybe it's a New York thing!)

I dunno. I made a canvas one for my horse, and he uses it as described, and has no problems cleaning up every last speck.

Is he considered a WWII vet because he was part of the occupation forces? This was almost a year post victory.

Re: Off Topic: Canteen cup lids

Wow! I never got around to looking up the 515th CA until now. I didn't know that they were part of the Defense of the Philippines. That does give those artifacts much greater significance. There was a large amount of WWI issue gear still in the supply system early in WWII, especially in the Philippi...

Re: Mounted Marine on Okinawa

Solid training may make the real difference. I once knew a Morgan stallion who would act like a perfect gentleman around mares, even when in heat, until the handler put the stud chain in his mouth. Then he knew that it was time to go to work - and it was "Katy bar the door"!

The denim fatigue uniform was common wear for the Cavalry in the late '30's and early '40's. Sam Cox can show a bunch of pictures.

More "instant" coffee, it seems what we call instant today came along much later than 1918. Yes. I'm aware the US Army had some sort of instant coffee during the American Civil War. I also understand the soldiers didn't like it at all. Dad would drink stuff like POSTUM & SANKA, but we...

Re: Need Info on M1916 Officers Training Saddle & Colonel Al

Col. Allen could also be Artillery, or any number of support branches associated with mounted troops (medical, veterinary, QM pack units, etc). For that matter, he could be a non-mounted officer who just liked to ride and procured a surplus training saddle from the depot.

Re: Need help identifying Possible 1805 UP saddle?

Could this possibly be a Walker Contract saddle, or one of the of the other Hussar-type saddles used at the beginning of the 19th century? Does it have US military provenance?

http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n155/alden405/TroopA251RmntSqn_zpsb43d1d92.jpeg Is that saddle way too far on the withers or am I mistaken? Sam, where do you always find this stuff? It's great! Tom IMO, it's not the whither location that is throwing you off optically, it's the fit of the saddle....
