Re: Horse Soldiers by Doug Stanton
Pat, in reading selewis' post, it appears that Professor John Arquilla (Naval Post Graduate School) is the one who made the comment regarding mounting SF on horses so they would be recognized as friendlies from the air, not V.D. Hanson. I don't see it as being far fetched, especially if it was menti...

Likewise, I don't understand why the pilot wanted the SF spotter's GPS position inside the fortress during the uprising, then dropped a bomb on the spotter!

Re: DI Examples (from Dallas)
Semper Peratus - "Always Ready". Yes, this phrase is a popular one. They all seem to play on two main themes: vigilance and honor. When I did my search I looked mainly at cavalry and infantry. I hadn't considered the Army Air Corps. It never occured to me that they wore Stetson's with DIs ...

Re: DI Examples (from Dallas)
Thanks for the info, Stable Sgt. This DI has been driving me nuts. Yes, this is a brooch type pin back. I did as you suggested and flipped it up. There are very tiny raised lettering near the catch that spells AMCRAFT.

Re: Horse Soldiers by Doug Stanton
selewis, thanks for the link to CSPAN BookTV. I watch BookTV frequently, I don't know how I missed this.
Dave, thanks for your comments. I've read the prologue and now starting Part One. I'm getting hooked so I will probably finish it by the weekend.

Horse Soldiers by Doug Stanton
I bought Horse Soldiers by Doug Stanton a couple of weeks ago but haven't started to read it seriously, yet. The dust cover states "The extraordinary story of a band of U.S. soldiers who rode to victory in Afghanistan." It is a true account of the Special Forces soldiers who secretly enter...

According to Col. Hans von Heydebreck, "the German Riding Rules for the Army of the Deutsche Reich were based on Gustav Steinbrecht's principles." An excellent English translation edition of The Gymnasium of the Horse by Gustav Steinbrecht can be found on Amazon.

Re: Gordon Russell Army Remount
The commentator describes the course on the second day of competition as 14 miles "at a good trot", 2.5 mile steeplechase, and 5 miles cross-country for a total of 21.5 miles. This accounts for the somewhat fatigued appearance of the riders. Does anyone know the time of the first rider acr...

Re: Gordon Russell Army Remount
Hi Sandy, That was me who cited the D'endrody comment from his book. I have a thread on the 1936 Olympics where you can actually view a video clip of Leni Riefenshtal's documentary and includes the infamous water hazard. You can see that the pond is so deep that it immediately stops the forward mome...

This sounds like a fascinating account of the effective use of properly deployed cavalry where the three main tenents of mobility, shock, and firepower (though in this case edged weapons and not pistols) are exemplified through proper planning and support (artillery, etc.). I think we are too quick ...

Regarding de Kunnfy's description of the horse's mind as that of a dream-like state could be consistent with Dr. Temple Grandin's assertion that the mind of animal is similar to that of an autistic in that they both think in pictures. Dr. Grandin is a high-functioning autistic and the head of Animal...

Frustrated with not being able to buy region one copies of some of the classic war pictures, I bought an OPPO brand DVD player. It is reasonably priced and will play all regions. I also have a copy of Waterloo on DVD that was produced in China and distributed by The Castaways Pictures. The soundtrac...
