Re: Did you have a relative in the Great War?

Hi Pat
Yes my Grandfather was a Driver Rider, with the RHA field gun team. He later taught Artillery Officers, and taught new driver riders who were going to the front line. He spent two days in a shell crater when his team were blown up, the two other drivers died, and his whole team of horses.

Re: Saddler CoH Sam Belasco LG

I hope this helps a CoH in standard British Army Ranks, he is the same as a Staff Sergeant or in the infantry a Colour Sergeant.

It means Corporal Of The Horse, a rank between Lance Corporal and Sargeant only used by the Household Cavalry.

Judging by the weave of the material it looks more like hessian. Which was used very often in saddle making.

Steve
It was known for the future that female soldiers would be used. They are just as good , and less male soldiers want to work with horses and the hard work it entails.

Joe
Yes that's where the brake is applied. But it does]have another purpose, when applied the team can keep the traces tight and keep them hanging down. There is always the danger that a trace, would get caught up on a horses legs.

S

Sorry Couvi I should have said a little more. Because the team are working at a slower pace that of walk, this method of marching was adopted to keep the pace of the team. It works very well and, it helps to add to the circumstances and reverence to the funeral..]

Re: Is this Roy Elderkins old unit?

Joe yes this was my old Regiment. On funerals I was the brake man on the gun carriage, to stop the team when stationary.

Couvi it is the traditional march when escorting the funeral carriage, the British Army's Slow March. Carried out on every funeral.

Re: Finnish cavalry photos, 1939-1945

Now that is something I have not seen for a long time horse inspection.Soldier standing in front of his horse ready for inspection, takes me back to the mounted police, and Kings Troop. The term was stand to your horse, next command in front of your horse, the bit was held on either side and the ho...

Re: On BBC 4: The Equine Army

This would be the second time for the Australians. Unable to take their horses home from Southern Africa. For the lucky ones homes to go to, the rest a poor reflection, on how horses are treated in war. They give so much and ask little in return, in Africa the shear neglect during that conflict, sho...

Re: On BBC 4: The Equine Army

I know how those men felt when they had to shoot and leave horses behind. I had to leave 700 not knowing what would become of them. We managed to find homes to some the remainder back into the new squadrons after that who knows. Australian Walers of course were a good capture for the Boers, during t...

Re: Equus Men Grey's Scouts.

The only comment I will make is, if a horse casts shoe there is no need to stop. Just remove the shoe on the opposite foot, and continue until they can be replaced. That is good field management, every soldier should carry a jack knife. This should be used to pull back shoeing nails, so that the sho...

Re: Equus Men Grey's Scouts.

Anulf I would like to reply to your questions, for which I have the answer. However it would involve me with the Regt and change of leadership, which I will not do. Things occurred for which I had no control over, my reason for leaving the Regt in 78 was a result of problems that were. occurring. So...
