 he term 'Pattern' refers to a specification
as laid down by the British War Department to govern the manufacture
of equipment for her armed forces. These patterns ensure that
the various companies contracted to manufacture this equipment
supply items of a known and compatible standard.
 In 1796 the first 'Universal Pattern' for the manufacture of
Cavalry saddles was issued. The UP saddle was developed at the
height of Cavalry as a mounted force and continued to evolve
until its final days.
The
last three patterns of the UP saddle, the UP1890,
UP1902 and UP1912 will be the focus - but not the
limit - of this website along with their associated bridles
and accoutrements.
The
