I have in collection an M1904 or 1918 rifle scabbard. It went through the standard modification to accept the M1 rifle by adding a gusset to widen the opening, shortening the muzzle end, adding a new plug and adding an op rod slot. There was at some point an additional modification to the slot to (and this is a guess on my part) to accept the M1 carbine. The closed end of the brass slot cover was cut and the slot in the leather was extended almost the exact width of the op rod handle of an M1 carbine. It has all the looks of a company saddler job. As can be seen from the photos the M1 carbine fits perfectly. Has anyone else seen a similar modification? Any input or opinions would appreciated.
Best, George
