true grit and the colt dragoon

Postby Larry Emrick » Wed Jun 08, 2011 10:22 am

Gentlemen: I watched the remake of True Grit last night when the DVD was finally released (I haven't been in a movie theatre since they started showing commercials) and have to say it is a first rate movie - at various times funny, scenic, warm and violent, although Rooster's portrayal is even more gritier than in the original.
Maddie's Colt dragoon still plays a brief but central role that sent me to the web to find out more about that iconic firearm. At 4 1/2 pounds it would have been a brute of a weapon for a 14-year-old.
It was authentically portrayed in the movie as a cap and ball for which the producers deserve full marks for pursuing historic accuracy.

It's interesting to note that the Colt Dragoon shows up in another film which John Wayne is associated with which also features child protagonist, that being The Cowboys. The smallest of the cowboys in that film (who went on to be a professional rodeo cowboy) showed up to the drive with a Dragoon and uses it in the climatic gun fight.
