Bonfire (archived thread)

Postby Pat Holscher » Wed Dec 22, 2004 7:42 am

As I recently bumped up an active thread on a Canadian RCMP funeral rig, I thought I'd also link in here one in which Larry Emerick provided us with an example of a Canadian military funeral in WWI of some note:

Pat,
I refer to Larry Emrick's photo of Lt.Col McCrae's horse posted on 05/07/2002, and to your 5/10/02 query as to the type of saddle.
It would appear to be the "Hussar" officer's pattern which was officially replaced by the MKIV but, as with most superseded equipment, continued in use for some years.

I was hoping for more information on that, thanks John!

Larry, can I repost that photo here?

Pat,
Its been mentioned before, but I should have stated again that the introduction of the MKIV was confirmed in 1903.

I posted this thread for Ray Stickel today, depicting a funeral of a trooper from the 19th Alberta Dragoons. I thought I'd link it into this related thread as well.

Pat: Thanks for posting Ray's photo. The reproduction and detail is fantastic. Note the Great West Saddlery building in the top right, and it looks to me as though some of the people lining the streets are wearing full-length buffalo coats, which is not as improbable as it may sound. Police in Winnipeg were still wearing them back in the late '60s (the 1960s that is). larry
