Here is a picture of Theodore Roosevelt wearing a riding coat on horseback:

It is interesting that the style of his riding coat and that of the later Army Field Uniform are similar.

And here's one of Roosevelt in finery complete with riding attire.

Here's a short article on the Eisenhower jacket. Intended as a combat article of clothing based on British battle dress, it was never really worn that way, however it was an attempt at reform of some of the problems noted above. The article has a pretty entertaining article from Eisenhower to Marshall noting that the US troops didn't appear "snappy"

It looks like Roosevelt is wearing the same outfit in both pictures (which would be logical). If so, it is interesting how much the riding jacket looks like a dress coat when unbuttoned. I have a black Melton riding coat which is very similar. It used to fit me so well, and look so nice, I often used it as a dress coat.

I think that we have firmly established that the military dress coat of the 30's derived from contemporary riding wear. Now for the origins of the necktie. I have heard stories that it had its origin in fox hunting where it was useful as an emergency sling in case of an accident...any other thoughts?

A link to a foxhunting site which describes the usefulness of a tie in an emergency:
