Indeed it is like seeing an old friend, Todd, though the fake US bosses appearing ON the cardboard seems to be thinning out a bit. Still FAR too many fakes out there...but most have been removed from the cardboard.

Whenever/wherever I find them I send a nice, gentle note drawing the seller's attention to the best site _I've_ found regarding fakes (and maybe it's owned by someone here)...http://www.rulen.com/4f/

As you can imagine, I get all sorts of replies (and non-replies, too!) to my "it's fake" emails. I must say the trend is for the would-be sellers to email me back, apologize (typically saying, "it was sold to me as original", etc....which i believe), and then they either take the item down or, at least, let folks know they've been informed "it may not be original".

I'm just a "bit guy" so I don't know much about other CW/military horse fakes. Is there a thread here dealing specifically with fake "military horse" related items? If not, it might make for some interesting, educational, mistake-preventing reading. If there IS such a thread (and I'll look too after I finish typing this), maybe it'd be worth a "bump".

Darn...... that pair looks pretty "good". The cardboard looks somehow familiar. Is the same set of fakes being transfered from dealer to dealer?

sigh...how many of these things ARE there out there?! wow. First ones I've seen on a "board". It's a nice touch but they kept the same paper label with type-written mis-information.

It's also hard to discount the combined influence of deeply held misinformation and ignorance.

Anyone with an interest in history has experienced that at some point. You'll run up on somebody who has a pet, ignorant, belief, and they're not going to be corrected. As in "Um. . . . that's not a Conquistador's sword left in Wyoming. . . they weren't here. . . that's an artillery short sword.". Have the proof? Doesn't matter, they're not going to believe it. Or "Um. . .the Colt 1873 revolver was not used in the Civil War. . . the "1873" is for the year "1873"". Nope, they're not buying that either. And so on.

Add the element of money, and you're really in an uphill battle.

Well, it's not a fake set of brass bosses, but yet another example of, at best, "wishful thinking".
