Dragoon carbine bucket with sling

Postby Trooper » Tue Jul 17, 2007 9:01 am

Am seeking examples of the carbine buckets with slings described in the Ordnance Manual of 1841 used by Dragoons in carrying the Hall carbines. They were renamed "boots" when the Grimsley equipments were adopted and used with the 1847 Musketoons. They are also described in General Order No. 31 of 1851 and remained in service until replaced by the "thimble" adopted with the McClellan saddle in 1859.

Illustrations can be seen in R. Rattenbury's "Packing Iron" p.34.

Thank you for reading this and any help in locating examples.

Grimsley Carbine "boot"

Postby Standtohorse » Sun Mar 02, 2008 4:25 am

These are same from Revolutionary Dragoons until 1859 when they started to use thimble to hold carbine forearm and it was suspended from Sling and Sling Swivil w/ Snap ass. During Mex War and earlier there was a closed tube with strap to attach same to saddles pommel this held Carbine's Muzzle at horses shoulder. Borderstates Leather Works offers repoductions of these and Doug may know of originals as well. Note these support muzzle of carbine not butt as used on some European dragoon equipments. In use you are effectively attaching youself to your mount when using either thimble or boot and leaving the carbine still attached to your sling assembly. There is no other way to support carbine in a '59 thimble but its a lot safer to mearly secure the carbine's wrist to pommel or cantle for safety reasons while riding with boot. Giving the carbine and sling a twist and putting it over your right shoulder while mounting or dismounting is advisable as well, leaves both hands free and prevents banging your mount. Enjoy.

K.L.,
Thank you for further explaining the carbine carrying devices I am seeking.
I will be very glad to hear from anyone who has original examples as I would like to add them to my study collection for use in future work.
