Tonight I caught a bit of William Saffire talking about his most recent book, a new edition of his dictionary of political terms. He was being interviewed by "The Book Guys" on their radio program via C-SPAN. Of course he was as entertaining and informative as usual, but one of the terms he mentioned was horse related, and is one that I don't think ever made it into any of our lists of that sort that we've generated from time to time. It was: " he's a shoo in". Anyone know or care to guess at the derivation?
Hint: it is often misspelled "shoe in" but has nothing to do with a salesman's foot in the front door.

Very close with race horse. The term comes from the race track. When several jockeys would collude to fix a race they would box in the rest of the field and shoo in the long shot in front of them.
A round on me anyway.

Right now, on CSpan II, there's a fellow by the name of Robert Zubrin whose rather unconvincingly discussing his book on alternative fuels. I mention this due to all the recent discussion of this topic here.
Not too convincing of fellow, however.
His central point, however, is that we're funding terrorism against us, by buying petroleum from the Middle East, and it'd be a good idea not too, if we didn't have to. Most folks would likely agree with that.
He's actually predicting the Saudi's would drop the price of oil to $30/bbl if a serious alternative fuel program gets up and running, based on his view that the alternatives would cost $50/bbl (rather optimistic).
