I heard part of this podcast while on the road earlier this week, and found it very interesting. I imagine the books are also quite interesting.

This book and the podcasts are on the dairies of Eramus Gilbreath, a lawyer who joined an Illinois unit (which he helped raise) at the start of the Civil War and whom stayed on in active duty for the rest of his life (he died of disease in Puerto Rico during the Spanish American War). Seeing Civil War service, Reconstruction service, Frontier duty, and service in the Spanish American War, his career and diaries covered the entire range of US service from 1861 through to nearly the end of the 19th Century.
