A very interesting 9 minute film of the 10th or 28th Cavalry at Camp Locket, California. A DoD film, appears to be shots intended to be used in the making of a film. Good clips of the Regiment on parade and in the field. Really enjoyed the thunder of hooves as the regiment rode past the camera men. Also enjoyed the NCO giving guidance to the soldier to “find some cover, G0d D@mn it!” and the poor soldier getting flustered and screwing up his lines and having to repeat the message to the Regimental Commander (which he did very well!). All in all good stuff. Had to be sometime in 1942 or 1943 with the M1 helmets they were wearing. The clip is at archive.Org and also on You Tube.

Is that photo reversed? Carbine straps seem to be on the wrong side. Saber too, I believe.

The color guard in the film clips was also all mounted on grays and in the ceremonial uniform but I couldn’t see if they had any weapons.

I based my comment regarding the 28th Cav being at Lockett on the histories at http://www.militarymuseum.org/CpLockett.html. Those histories, of course, may be incorrect or perhaps only a Squadron of the 28th was there. Nonetheless, two of seven comments that the 28th was at Lockett follow.

“In 1942, the 10th Cavalry Regiment (the famed Buffalo Soldiers) moved into Camp Lockett to replace the11th Cavalry Regiment which had been converted into an armored unit. In 1943 The 28th Cavalry Regiment made up of inductees joined the 10th to form the 4th Cavalry Brigade of the 2nd Cavalry Division (Horse).”

“At the same time The 27th Cavalry Regiment, also made up of inductees, joined the 9th Cavalry Regiment to form the 5th Cavalry Brigade. This brigade was stationed in Fort Clark, Texas. Their duty was to guard the Texas-Mexican Border. While the 10th and 28th guarded the California-Mexican Border.”
