Greetings,
While reviewing FIRES BULLETIN the publication for the U.S. Artillery in the July-September 1917 issue in the Archive Found this good article.

Also from Youtube it appears the suggestion was taken.

The mounting of the recruit reminds me of me climbing on Laddie.
