I picked this up in a trade back in the spring. It is illustrated in plate VII of the May 10, 1905 Cavalry Ordnance Manual. It is much lighter in weight that the more common M1885 style nosebag. Two other differences are a web neck strap with brass grommet eyelets and a double thick canvas bottom. Apparently the canvas bottom did not wear well as it was replaced somewhere around 1908 by a very similar bag with a double thick round leather bottom, but retaining the canvas neck strap. It was issued to a NY artillery unit and is stamped I.C. for "inspected and condemned" before leaving military ownership. Hope you enjoy the photos.

Just my observation, but I would believe the firmer, leather bottom, made it easier for the horse to get all the grain. Having watched my horse use it, he would put the bottom on the ground, push his mouth down for a bite than raise it, letting the weight of the bag pull it away, to chew. I would think the canvas bottom would trap some grain in the folds and make it harder for the horse. Just my thought.

Hi George
A nice addition!
Coincidently I was recently reading through some period paperwork and saw a reference you might be interested in, this refers perhaps more to the 1910 dated nose bag you have with the circular leather bottom. The entries were:
"Nosebag , model of 1908 (cloth bottom)"
"Nosebag, model of 1908 (leather bottom)" Possibly the nose-bag shown in the 1908 Horse Equipments
I jotted it down but now cannot find the reference again, you know how it is, if or when I find it again I will send a copy over.
Kurt.

Kurt,
Thanks. I'd appreciate any information you can provide. It's amazing how little information is available on these relatively late issued pieces equipment.
Best George.

For those interested I'm posting photos of the M1908 leather bottom nosebag Kurt was referring to.
