Hi, I am new to this forum, and only found you when researching Friebergers.

I came across a post about the use of Haflingers by the Swiss Army. All the photos that I have seen have been of Friebergers, or as they are also called Franches-Montagnes, a warmblooded draught horse from the Jura region.

I also see that the Austrians use Haflingers, which is interesting as the Indian Army recently purchased a breeding herd of 400 Norikers, originally called Pinzgauers.

I have two, which have been imported from Austria and they have an exceptional temperament. I also bought an ex Swiss Army Packsaddle, from Germany, cost more to have it delivered than it cost, hope to do some long distance riding.

Best wishes from the UK.

There are a couple of threads up here specifically on Swiss military pack units. The should come up on the search feature. If they don't, post back, and I'll bump them up when I have the chance.

Very interesting. I was unaware of the Indian purchase. If there's any specific information on that, it'd make for a good independent thread.

Swiss pack saddles occasionally show up in surplus venues in the US. I've run into them, for example, at Jax's Sporting Goods in Ft. Collins. Some other European pack saddles, some of which are difficult to ID in terms of origin, show up as well. The Swiss ones could be ordered for awhile from Deutsche Optik, but as I recall they weren't cheap. Anyhow, there's a couple of older threads mentioning them.
