Saddle Blankets

For any of you using the UP Saddle it should be used with the correct saddle blanket, this a chocolate brown pure wool blanket with no edge seams to rub. They give good shock absorption and dissipate sweat well and dry quickly in most conditions.

They are also virtually unavailable as surplus items. ( If anyone knows different please let me know!)

I purchased one a few years ago from the current manufacturers to MOD, James Walker & Sons Ltd, Blanket Manufacturers, West Yorkshire, tel 01924 492277. The product description is '55x67 MOD Saddle brown'I think they were around £50 each, rather expensive but being brand new they will offer much more spring to protect your horse's back, I have had mine since 1998 and it is still good & springy. Sounds expensive but most fancy numnahs and saddle pads are more than this today.

PS no I dont work for them, so this is not a plug just info on the only place (if it's still around) to buy these balnkets new.

Got hold of them today, they no longer produce them. Will try to find out who does.

Is the British blanket dimensionally different from the regular British bed blanket?

Yes, the saddle blanket is a little smaller, it is also a far denser weave and thicker giving far more shock absorption than a bed blanket. Bed blankets are normally grey with a stripe down the middle, they can be used if you have nothing else.
