Finally got around to cleaning up and restoring a very tatty UP saddle and found the following unit ID markings:
16 RA B7 on one numnah pad with what looks like a D on its side inside a circle.
And on the other pad 16 RA and either AI or A1.
The girth extension straps are marked Harwood & Sons 1915 but nothing else is dated.
Wondering if anyone can shed any light as I would have thought if WW1 era it would be stamped either RHA or RFA and not RA.
Also I thought that batteries were delineated by alpha as opposed to numerical identity.
But it's possible it's a newer saddle and only the girth extensions are from 1915. Or alternatively it's been made up from several different saddles.
