They seem to be holding both reins with their left hand, but they also have the bite in their right hand. The rider on the far side has his right hand a tad lower, the same.selewis wrote:How so, Jim? They appear to be bridged but it's hard for my morning eyes to see exactly.

Re: A November 11 question about rememberance of the Great W
I read once that England lost almost an entire generation of young men in WWI. If that is true, it could explain the strong feelings.

Re: Lancer Drill and Tene pegging
Those fellows must have had incredible upper body strength to swing that lance around like that, not to mention the timing required. I know it was bamboo, but still.

In the last picture Brian posted, the LTC is wearing "dismounted" leggings. Here's a pic of LTC Olstead, O'Ryan's Chief of Staff. He's wearing a flapped Audley. (Maybe it's a New York thing!)

Re: From a World War One era parade
I noticed that many of the troopers are holding the reins in their "right" hand and some have the reins in "both" hands. Normally, military riders use the "left" hand.

Re: Rare Canvas Bottom M1905 Nosebag
Just my observation, but I would believe the firmer, leather bottom, made it easier for the horse to get all the grain. Having watched my horse use it, he would put the bottom on the ground, push his mouth down for a bite than raise it, letting the weight of the bag pull it away, to chew. I would th...

Re: Great War Memorials
The very same thing almost happened here. This statue was struck by a car and knocked completely over. The mayor wanted it moved to the park and the names of the two paques combined. The local AL and VFW protested. The head of the AL said he had an ancestor listed on the "colored" plaque a...

Re: US Cav Photo - 1912 Experimental Equipment
Looking t the picture of the individual trooper I can clearly see the ring that captures the rifle while in the boot. How did this work? looks like it would have been hard to get the rifle into it, unless it opened and closed around it. Was it a lose fit or did it secure the rifle to the trooper? D...

Re: Trooping the Colour
Just to be pedantic, the King's Troop are equipped with the 13-pdr rather than the 18-pdr, which was too heavy to be used by the RHA in their intended role of fire support for the cavalry. Dave! You know you made me look up 'pedantic!' :D Yes, Horse Artillery would have been equipped with the light...

Re: British cavalry, film from 1917 (found by John M.)
Interesting how they throw the rifle over the horse's neck to provide counter-balance and aid in mounting. I think that might have been done to get the rifle out of the way in order to mount. They could use the same hand to hold the rifle and grab mane, freeing up the other hand and leg to mount. D...
