Actually, come to think if it, that pose idea is quite likely the case. Of course, it does nevertheless show what he thinks a fine horseman should look like.

Re: Nelson Miles, May 30, 1921

Sandy has it right. Myles seems to be in an exaggerated form of the old "chair" seat that fell into disrepute when better understandings of bio-mechanics entered the mounted services.

Re: Washington D. C. Hunt, December 4, 1920

I, too had a girlfriend experience on horseback in Rock Creek Park. M family lived in DC for a time, and I went back at times to visit friends after heading to Texas for school. In Texas I spent a lot of time on horseback. So, when I asked an old friend on a date, a ride in the park seemed just the ...

Re: M1928 McClellan cavalry saddle questions

Late in the game, the army produced stirrups specifically for the M1928 modification. I've had a couple of pair over the years including one unissued pair I sold last year. I am 1300 miles from my office and the photo files, but am under the impression that they were stamped 1941. Interestingly, in ...

I have one much like that. Normally I'd have dismissed it as a commercial copy, but it is marked "Property of US Government." Never been quite able to figure that out.

Re: Horses and WWII Gasoline Rationing

Having just re-read all the posts, I wonder if there aren't a couple of difference angles from which o view these questions: horses in work use; and women in the workforce. As to horses, from what I saw in a relict pocket of Indiana as a small boy in the 1960s, where horses did some tasks ( I rememb...

First is not cavalry but good march music and the officer's horses are interesting including the one who acted up directly in front of the Emperor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTG5RLg-IAM&t=34s That was a movie, but this is not. This is the very last time the Austrian Kaiser Hymn, later used...

Re: Saddlebag side strap.

Good drawing of a scarce part. When I was actively collecting, I must have owned a couple dozen pairs of bags, and probably no more than three or four had the side straps.

Re: Interesting data on US saddlery situation in 1940-41

Actually, the Germans were more horse-mounted than mechanized during the war. Despite the German propaganda, in Europe, we wee the ones with mechanized army. As to failure to see the end of era of the horse, consider the remount system and its nearly superhuman efforts to bring in superb European bl...

Can you imagine how unpleasant it was to travel any distance in those vehicles? By way of reference, that same time-frame was a period of EXPERIMENTAL cross-continental drives by various clubs and manufacturers. Even here in America to say nothing of Mexico, there were few paved roads outside good-s...

Sauerlender collection at Haley Library

I was just at the Haley Library's annual budget meeting (I am one of the 5 trustees there). Much favorable comment was made of Philip Sauerlender's wonderful gift of a year and a half ago of Cavalry books, artifacts and archival materials including very rare original Ft. Riley training films. We hav...

Re: Confederate Brands

Might have been a short sword, as some artillery non-commissioned officers on both sides of the WBS were armed with just such. It is generally believed that this was only the case of dismounted "foot" artillery troops, but in wartime, who knows? Artillery short swords turn up with odd iden...

Re: Remounts

Sandy, that stirs some old memories. I am not quite sure but seem to recall that a number of very fine purebred Arabs wound up in a Dept. of the Interior pack string. They were bought out of that and, again if memory serves, became part of the foundation stock for a very well-regarded strain. I'll h...

Re: Remounts

Its popular wisdom that the Army breeding program did a great deal to improve horseflesh in America. Some Q-Horse breeders certainly think so. I have no reason to doubt it, but am fairly ignorant. If anyone knows of a good history that shows the studs and their bloodlines and some of their known get...

Re: Correct late period McClellan field pack

Yes, Todd, that is true. However, because I plan eventually to donate this to the Haley Library, I'd like it to be as well-documented as possible. I have one other issue-- the picket pin. I have one of those pins that is close to specs but not quite there. Dorsey and McPheeters say they are not issu...
