Re: 1/6 Scale Ringgold saddle

Very nice. More so than the ratio, the photo with the hand next to the saddle really shows the scale. Good work, thanks for posting this.

Piaffer? I too was wondering what was going on here. At first glance it appears that the horse is side stepping, moving obliquely towards the camera with the left diagonal in motion; but the riders attitude/ position indicates that he is moving straight forward and that this is a phase of the walk a...

Sort of to Joe's point regarding expense: aren't the logistics involved in maintaining horse soldiers more difficult and costly than for infantry- especially before mechanized transport?

Wouk on horse use

“Contrary to a notion poplar at the time- a notion which has never quite died- the Wehrmacht was not a giant solid phalanx of tanks and armored cars, spitting flame and death as it clanked through whole nations. Hitler had a horse drawn army. It was larger than Napoleon’s, but mainly it advanced int...

Is that sort of an odd seat? Yes, common though, especially in Australia among stockmen; where it bled into their mounted services, I believe. It was sometimes referred to as a "stockman's seat". It was never regulation in the U.S. Army and was much derided by the young turks of the forwar...

I'm not sure that the url came through as hoped. If not, the audio book can be found at the Internet Archive.

The Prairie Traveler by R.B. Marcy

I suppose that most of our members will already be familiar with this book; but it was new to me, so I pass it along, just in case. It is an audio edition and, so, offers food for thought while effortlessly rolling along the interstate highways. Enjoy, Sandy https://archive.org/details/prairie_trave...

Is the pack station just outside of Missoula still operating? I’ve never been there but have passed by the turnoff at Nine Mile many times- sometimes stopping at the tavern there for lunch- which if I recall correctly was once a stage stop.

Re: Washington D. C. Hunt, December 4, 1920

My father worked for a defense contractor that had a small office in the nation’s capitol and for two years, ’62-’64 we lived in Falls Church, Virginia. I remembered it as a rural area where we fished, hunted, rode horses, and enjoyed what seemed to be a generally bucolic lifestyle. So, when my wife...

Pat; I can only respond anecdotally and say that the seat leather and associated pockets employed in attaching same to the tree were and still are in good condition. Not so the billet straps however. The second (and last ) time I used the saddle they broke when I popped over a small ditch which resu...

Re: unidentified saddle

I bought one of those saddles more than 20 years ago from A A Callister's tack store in Salt Lake City- West Valley actually. $80.00 is the sum that sticks in my mind, not much more certainly, maybe a little less. I can say that the saddle is comfortable, but I only used it a few times as it was in ...
