Re: Merry Christmas!

I will add my "Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year" to all that have already been offered. I plan to go to Kansas City on Thursday morning to be with my daughter and son-in-law. The storm that Pat mentioned is scheduled to arrive in eastern Kansas about noon on Thursday. I may have a hard...

Re: Prices at the Dawn of the Gasoline Age, Dusk of the Equine

Pat: I just noticed that back in November you mentioned that you guys had purchased a Chevy Suburban a couple of years ago. You stated that it got better gas mileage than the Pathfinder it replaced. I am curious as to what the mileage is. I own a 2007 Chevy Trailblazer which is smaller than the Subu...

Re: The Everyday Tasks of Cavalry Life

Another thing that is strange is that at least the 3 men whose legs can be seen are wearing officer's boots and spurs. This may be some kind of officer's class on shoeing. The hats also look like officer's hats.

Re: Last US Cavalry Parade 1946

The 29th DI is listed in Vol. 3 of the ASMIC Armor/Cavalry Catalog as Z29D1 and is an E Class. That means, as Richard stated, that the insignia was invented and made by a collector on the basis of drawings, blazons or whim for sale to collectors, veterans associations, etc. Never worn by troops. Dal...

Re: 1916 Cavalry Equipment Board Report

I sent Pat two photos of the 1917 saddle to post. One shows the stripped saddle and the other shows the saddle with equipment.

The US Militaria Forum has a couple of good photos of this machine gun. Go to usmilitariaforum.com. Scroll down to the section on firearms, click on the entry entitled show machine guns or something like that. Scroll down for a ways and there will be a color photo of the M1919A2 and a black & wh...

Pat: I am not sure, having never talked with a unit member who had seen it in use. If it was worn, it would almost have to have been sewn on either the uniform coat or the campaign hat.

I note that at 1600 CDT on 3/27, there are still no bids.

Pat: That unissued hat that I had, I bought back in the 1960s for next to nothing. I don't remember where it came from, but it was a nice hat.

It will be interesting to see what that hat sells for. I sold an unissued M1902 hat several years ago for $250.

On Page 38 of BRASS SPIKES AND HORSETAIL PLUMES, A HISTORY OF U.S. ARMY DRESS HELMETS, 1872-1904 by Gordon Chappell, the following is noted: "The contract-procured enlisted helmet shells always were made of felt, a type of cloth which is not spun or woven, but is made of matted fibers of wool o...

I have looked through the regulations from 1872 through 1902 regarding the fatigue hats. They are rudimentary at best. G.O. No. 92 dated October 26, 1872 states: "FATIGUE HAT. For Officers and enlisted Men: Of black felt, according to pattern, to be worn only on fatigue duty and on marches or c...

According to the December 1973 Armor-Cavalry DI Catalog published by ASMIC, there was a DI for the 1st Armored Car Squadron. It was listed as "C" Class which meant that it was worn by the unit but was not approved by The Institute of Heraldry or its predecessors. The latest Armor-Cavalry C...

Somehow that doesn't look very appetizing. What are the guys in front doing? Are they cutting up chunks of meat? Look at the stains on the jacket of the guy serving the troops.

Dusan: You are correct. There is no visible method of attachment for the revolver holster. You would think that with all of the research that the sculptor did, he would have corrected that problem. I looked through the Meadows book on U.S. Military Holsters to see if he had any comment on the use of...

Brian: I presume that you are talking about the early M1904 which was basically the same as the M1896 except for the color. Ordnance Memoranda No. 1719 of 10 May 1905 shows the quarter strap lengths as follows: Pommel strap - 52", Cantle strap - 53". However you stated that your pommel str...
