Re: Question - How were WW1 picket ropes carried by Canadians?
Todd, Pat: After a bit more research overnight, here's an update: The picket pin, rope and nosebag or water bucket were strapped on the P08 sword scabbard on the left side of the horse and kept in place by placing the picket pin rope loop around the throat of the scabbard. Apparently two picket pins...

Re: Question - How were WW1 picket ropes carried by Canadians?
Hi Todd: Wonder of wonders, I have been able to log in after all this time. You may already have received a reply to your post about picket rope and pin but here's another thought. I went back over some of my old research papers and photos and the best I can come up with is that they were strapped h...

Dave:
I could not find the Lawrence Ordnance boot, but googled SMLE for sale and found one on Amazon, of all places, that looks pretty good. It needs darkening but it is a good match to my original. Also, try What Price Glory.

Re: what is it?
Hi Again: I am pretty sure you have a driver's saddle. RFA almost certainly refers to Royal Field Artillery; West Broom.... is probably West Bromwich, which a quick google search reveals had a RFA connection. It also had - still has - a saddlery and is near Walsall, which was at the heart of the Bri...

Hi Again:
Have a look at the drivers in the mysterious saddles post a couple down from yours. Does yours look like them?

Re: what is it?
Hi: It is hard to make out from the photos, but I suspect it is a UP driver's saddle that has seen better days. One of the distinguishing features of the drivers is lack of a spoon, the projection on the back of the cantle, which facilitated carrying of kit. It was not necessary for drivers because ...

Re: Three Mysterious Canadian Military Saddles? Two UPs.
Sadly not much. There is an old Barnsby saddle on e-bay today for $67 . The two UPs should be worth more, although not much more because of their condition

Re: Three Mysterious Canadian Military Saddles? Two UPs.
Hi: The best of your saddles is the Barnsby, which I think is probably civilian, although the company also made military saddles. It appears to be in excellent condition and probably useable if those girth billet straps are safe. Interestingly, it has four billets as in a present-day dressage saddle...

Re: Three Mysterious Canadian Military Saddles? Two UPs.
The two on the ends appear to be drivers' saddles. The other is from the English saddle - making centre of walsall but does not appear military. All seem to be in good condition considering their age. More photos of the rigging and undersides would help.

Re: British cavalry, film from 1917 (found by John M.)
. That is a perfectly executed mount right out of the British 1912 manual of horsemanship for cavalry and mounted rifles. Notice how high the Enfield butt sticks out of the bucket, which makes it really difficult (lmpossible for old guys) to lift ones leg high enough when mounting to clear it. Also ...

Re: Studebaker saddle
HI Jerry: It's pretty hard to tell whether or not it would be worth trying to restore your saddle but you have a big project because of the extent of the modifications, and when you finish, at best, you will have a saddle marred by old needle holes from where you have removed the add-ons. More photo...

I found another version of this film, with some of the same footage, in the Pathe archives, with the troopers said to be Portuguese.

Re: madsen machine rifle
Hi Pat: I just stumbled on it with google search of madsen machine gun and a whole bunch of stuff came up, including some utube material of not only a madsen but a lewis being fired. fascinating stuff. compared to the lewis, you can easily see why the madsen was favored but then the trials were cond...

Gentlemen: In the course of researching SMLE rifle buckets I googled a document called The Madsen Machine Rifle, which provides fascinating reading and extols the advantages of the weapon over both the Lewis and the Hotchkiss, which was the principal machine gun for British-Canadian-Indian cavalry o...

Enfield Carbine Bucket
Hello Patrick: I have been doing some research on your bucket and while I won't say for certain that it is not for an SMLE, I suspect that it might be for a Madsen or Rexer light mahine gun. This subject was discussed at length on the forum some years ago and although I found the discussion I could ...

Re: WW1 British Cavalry painting in progress
Gentlemen:
I wonder if the article of kit to which Brian refers is the water bottle. It is on the correct side although a little low. As to the possibility of a holster, revolvers were not generally issued to troopers except for specialists.

Re: New World War One site
That is an interesting- looking site and I was interested to see the main photo on the home page with troops going over the top. That's a famous picture, with the Tommy thumbing his nose at the enemy, but I have also seen a version in which he is not thumbing his nose. I have seen other versions of ...

dances with wolves
I saw the first half of Dances with Wolves again last night, the first time I have ever seen the opening scenes and there is a good but fleeting shot of a McClellan saddle and several other fleeting shots of interesting tack, equipment , uniform and weaponry details.
