Re: Prices at the Dawn of the Gasoline Age, Dusk of the Equine

Truth be known, it's really not a good idea now. It's just that now, it's expected. While living up in Puget Sound, I was getting ready to get on the hiway one morning during a winter storm, as I approched the on ramp I looked up and saw a state patrol car going down the road sideways, at which poi...

Re: Prices at the Dawn of the Gasoline Age, Dusk of the Equine

Riding in LA was a kick, especially at rush hour. One of the trails ran next to the 134 freeway, I loved the looks on drivers faces as you pass them on horseback. It is also a great place to desensitize a horse. Griffith Park is an amazing resource as are the neighborhoods and the associations that ...

Re: Prices at the Dawn of the Gasoline Age, Dusk of the Equine

Shortly thereafter the city fathers kicked him out and he set up operations in the Hollywood Hills not far from the Griffith Park observatory.] The stable is still there! Just down from the Observatory. I spent several years living at another stable on the other side of the park in the Equestrian D...

Note the item for a private with 30 years service.

You wouldn't see that anymore. . .
The up or out system was a constant source of problems while I was in service....We concidered it an enforced Peters Principle.

Re: Olympic Coverage

The Oxygen network carried all the equestrian events, which was ok if you have cable or if your cable network carries it.

I wish the directors knew more about the sports they cover, the editing cuts for the cross country coverage are annoying.

Re: Olympic Coverage

From what I remember the original rules for MP were shooting military side arm at 25 m, swim 300 m, fencing epee, 4K run and 5k cross country ride. But then the teams were all from the military in those days so you can imagine the riding was at a level far and above todays, (The military was in char...

Re: Olympic Coverage

Modern Pentathlon In their defense, it is a tough sport, and not very popular, (more popular in Europe) I think there were only 4 competitions in the States this year. It’s hard to get good at anything with out competing, practice is fine but not the same as competition. And I read that they had a c...

Re: Prices at the Dawn of the Gasoline Age, Dusk of the Equine

I saw an add here in Tucson from 1914 that gas was 15cents a gallon. according to a handy cost of living calculator this equals $3.11 in 2007 dollars....

Re: 1916 Army officers' saddle test report

They still make a New York Police model of saddle Yes they show that one in the catalogue, actually a couple of varations of it. but in the special order section they list the "Officers Field saddle" (with the scary note "call for price") I sent an enquiry to them today, I'm hop...

Smith-Worthington still offers an "Officers Field Saddle" in the custom section of their catalogue. I have been wondering what model it is, i should just call and find out.

<i>"They obviously carried some fodder which I presume was grain for higher energy content than grass as mentioned above."</i> From what I have read, the units bought corn locally on this campaign as a grain. Col. Tompkins writes that during the campaign the units would pay <u>cash</u> for...

I think there is the beginings of a great library here. I would add only 3 With Scouts and Cavalry by , Harold B. Wharfield Chasing Villa, by Col. Frank Tompkins Saddles, by Russel H. Beatie I incude With Scouts and Cavalry, as it is a good book dealing with the beginning of the modern era, Warfield...
