Re: Looking for original WWII German cavalry stirrups

Hi,

I would go with Will's suggestion and try the deutscher kavallerieverband facebook page. English is no problem.

Best

Re: German, Prussian Field Artillery Six Horse Team Harness and Saddles

Ralph,

I am most impressed by your work! I shared your link on the German Cavalry Association facebook page. Hope you don't mind, but I do not think there is anything comparable in Germany. Outstanding work and thanks for sharing.

Re: Identification help needed

Hi guys, he is not sitting on his crotch but rather the buttocks. The way he holds the reins is also not very professional. Is he from a mounted unit? The boots look hungarian to me but might be of the old ulan type, sp maybe polish?. The stirrups are the typical austro-hungarian type as Tom mention...

Re: German cavalryman shooting

Shooting while standing on the horses back was no standard training feature. It was done by a few troopers to show the high training level the remounts had reached. Standard training was firing a pistol mounted, but no rifle or smg shooting from horseback. This was done dismounted, as the German Cav...

Re: Ottoman Turk (Great War period) saddles, etc.

Dan, the carbine boot was used by the Schutztruppe in the Herero war in South West Africa prior to WWI. All the photos I have seen so far show the carbine or rifle slung across the back in the WWI period. I'm at work now, but I'll check at home if I can find any reference to the bucket use between 1...

Pat,

yes it is, but just the one hanging behind the saddle, not the type with the carbine (what is it by the way?) lying across the riders leg.

Left-side-horse-tackle.jpg Right-side-horse-tackle.jpg Bridle and horse kit.jpg Thanks gentlemen! I don't often post photos on this web site, so had to remember how and trial-and-error my way thru. In the third photo (pre-war), I can see what looks like it might be a German bridle. Maybe. Can't see...

Re: Ottoman Turk (Great War period) saddles, etc.

I found one set of files on the Library of Congress web site that may be useful. These photos were created 1880 to 1893 (so not exactly the right period) and concern the Turkish 1st Lancer regiment. Some horse equipment looks German (stirrups and the horse wallet on the NCO photo for example). Some...

Pat,

I believe they are German. Look at the caps, collar on the soldier on the left and the belt buckle plus jackboots are typical German of the WWI time frame.

Re: Photos of U.S. Remont Depot 7, France

Tom, The racks held the hay above the mangers. The stock could reach up and pull it down taking what they needed. This kept the feed fresh and allowed once a day or every other day restocking of the hay. Many old feed barns of the West are still this way but then they were built in the same time. C...
