Re: Saddler CoH Sam Belasco LG

I hope this helps a CoH in standard British Army Ranks, he is the same as a Staff Sergeant or in the infantry a Colour Sergeant.

It means Corporal Of The Horse, a rank between Lance Corporal and Sargeant only used by the Household Cavalry.

Steve
It was known for the future that female soldiers would be used. They are just as good , and less male soldiers want to work with horses and the hard work it entails.

Joe
Yes that's where the brake is applied. But it does]have another purpose, when applied the team can keep the traces tight and keep them hanging down. There is always the danger that a trace, would get caught up on a horses legs.

Sorry Couvi I should have said a little more. Because the team are working at a slower pace that of walk, this method of marching was adopted to keep the pace of the team. It works very well and, it helps to add to the circumstances and reverence to the funeral..]

Re: Is this Roy Elderkins old unit?

Joe yes this was my old Regiment. On funerals I was the brake man on the gun carriage, to stop the team when stationary.

Couvi it is the traditional march when escorting the funeral carriage, the British Army's Slow March. Carried out on every funeral.

Re: Finnish cavalry photos, 1939-1945

Now that is something I have not seen for a long time horse inspection.Soldier standing in front of his horse ready for inspection, takes me back to the mounted police, and Kings Troop. The term was stand to your horse, next command in front of your horse, the bit was held on either side and the ho...

Re: Equus Men Grey's Scouts.

The only comment I will make is, if a horse casts shoe there is no need to stop. Just remove the shoe on the opposite foot, and continue until they can be replaced. That is good field management, every soldier should carry a jack knife. This should be used to pull back shoeing nails, so that the sho...

Re: Equus Men Grey's Scouts.

Anulf I would like to reply to your questions, for which I have the answer. However it would involve me with the Regt and change of leadership, which I will not do. Things occurred for which I had no control over, my reason for leaving the Regt in 78 was a result of problems that were. occurring. So...

Re: Equus Men Grey's Scouts.

Pat Yes corporals formed a larger part of the Army, and were the backbone. One corporal in Grey's when a Troop came under fire from the Mozambique border, grabbed an infantry mortor without base plate, propped it against a tree and took out a firing position. The area was called Villa Salazar, and b...

Re: Equus Men Grey's Scouts.

What may be of interest to you Jack, that the barracks of Grey's was next to an ammunition depot. Someone decided to blow it up, would you think that there would be chaos, no even though there were un exploded munitions falling out of the sky. They did not lift their heads but carried on grazing.

Re: Equus Men Grey's Scouts.

Jack when Grey's were formed there were a number constraints placed upon us. Firstly that off manpower, we did not have sufficient men, secondly Army HQ did not give us enough time to train horses. In their wisdom we had enough horses but not men horses were expendable men were not. They wanted us o...

Re: The South African Defence Force and Horse Mounted Infantry Operations, 1974 - 1985

A very good article, we sent 2 Men from Grey's to Potchefstrom. Sgt Greyling and Sgt Rob Early, to see if we were on par with SADF Mounted Infantry. We were and of course we borrowed ideas from them and they from us, although they did not use the Mac, they had their own saddle set up. We had one of ...

Equus Men Grey's Scouts.

I have read through the book, and found it very factual it consist mainly of the contacts of Grey's. There are plenty of photos and actual accounts including maps etc. A little heavy on the price.

Re: Grey's Scouts on Film

The Grey's Officer seen on the film was Robert "Rob" Early, who whilst serving in the Army was the author, of a book called "A Time of Madnes", Other than Grey's we both served in the Rhodesian Military Police SIB, briefly, doing separate work.

The SA Air Force were there as back up should it be required. We had a number of SA Forces with us they were taught to carry out Counter Insergancey opperations. Pat the Rhodesian Air Force had a collection of aircraft and helicopters. They ranged from Bells, Alloettes,Gloucesters. Canberras Hunters. There were others but the names allude me at the moment.
