Re: Leather Treatment Puzzle

My comments are made on the basis of seeing if it would be usable for display on a period saddle. I would therefore unravel it to asses the overall condition and see if there are any markings. It is difficult to know just how stiff the leather is without handling it in person, being made of quite th...

Re: Nelson Miles, May 30, 1921

Seeing the photo reminded me of one I have, added below a member of C troop 13th cavalry circa 1907, similar seat and like in the photo of Nelson Miles he has a Whitman saddle.

Re: Officers Spurs

Hi Couvi There are a few options for that time period as you know it was a time of change, the pattern 1903 spurs were about to be introduced but an officer could have been wearing 1885's, 1888's or even 1903 box spurs. Later when the 1902 dress uniform is still being worn the 1911 spurs were being ...

Re: Saddlebag side strap.

Hi Dick I might have a copy of the drawing for them but cannot check until tomorrow, failing that I have some loose examples and others on various model saddlebags I can measure, but doubt they changed much if at all over the years. As to adding photos when you Post a reply, there is a box below &qu...

Re: Remembering Columbus March 9th 1916.

Todd well spotted yes they are. The 30/06 cases were kindly given to me by a good friend, he has been visiting Columbus for many years and has both picked them up over the years and been given them by people who had found them, I was very appreciative what a great gift to be given. What made it bett...

An odd Columbus related item, oversized cardboard peanut shell with ribbon that once contained what? If any knows or has an idea I would appreciate their thoughts.

Remembering Columbus March 9th 1916.

Just a small post on the anniversary of the attack on Columbus and to remember those civilians and soldiers who lost their lives. Also those who fought off the attack and pursued the attackers into Mexico. The first pic shows a selection of related items, the military items being of the period and m...

Hi sandy

Sorry for not responding to your reply sooner, yes it looks to be a faux pigskin leather, the leather is also thinner than that found on arsenal produced items.

Re: Help Identify US Pommel Pockets

Todd thank you for the work you have put in, it does sound very promising reading that description. Any ideas on where might be a good home for these being such an obscure item, I imagine there is no one collecting this kit being so few were made, it would be a shame just to store them away, well he...

Re: Help Identify US Pommel Pockets

Thanks Todd, I will be sure to keep all the newspaper. The photo is very tantalizing if only it was not a packed saddle, the pommel pocket itself appears quite similar from what we can see including having the securing strap sewn to the outside of the flap, whilst not exclusive (enlisted M1912 pocke...

Help Identify US Pommel Pockets

I am just wondering if anyone might be able to identify these pommel pockets or have any thoughts or observations about them, firstly some background on them. I bought them fairly inexpensively around twenty years ago just as "saddlebags", at the time I was interested in them due to their ...

Hi Couvi Thanks for the post it made interesting reading as did the link you provided. I was curious about the Cline Luggage Support, 100 of which were trialed by the 2nd cavalry, I was fortunate to find a google link to the Patent should anyone be interested. I doubt an example will ever show up fo...

They are quite impressive wings, below is photo of a pair that was with a breathtaking display of Captain Sam Walker's possessions back in 2012, it included uniform items, sabre, pistols, knife, canteen and various other items relating to Sam Walker.
