Re: Looking for original WWII German cavalry stirrups

Good Evening. You might try the Deutscher Kavallerieverband group on FaceBook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/214731098660054/ There also the International Cavalry Association https://www.facebook.com/groups/129663340489605/ I've met folks in both groups. There is a wide variety of knowledge and sk...

Actually, this style of riding lives on. The link is a photo taken in 2017 at the TN Walking Horse National Celebration in Shelbyville, TN. It's the Presentation of the Colors. You will find a few riders to ride this way, but not all. https://mtsusidelines.com/2017/09/03/photo-gallery-tennessee-walk...

Re: Remembering Columbus March 9th 1916.

My wife and I attended the 100th Anniversary celebration in Columbus in 2016. It was quite a show (with 150+ mounted riders from Mexico) and a major contingent of Active Duty troops from Ft. Bliss. There is a nice, if small, museum there. The town has one motel with 7 rooms, 2 restaurants that only ...

Re: Horses and WWII Gasoline Rationing

When I was in Law School at Marquette in Milwaukee the Dean was discussing some taxation issues in class and got off onto a tangent about property taxes and German Socialists. The WI German Socialists were a bit odd in that they did not believe in deficit spending. They controlled the Milwaukee City...

Re: Horses and WWII Gasoline Rationing

My mother did a summer in D.C. at the Pentagon (1944, IIRC) as some sort of "clerical" worker. I suspect she was basically a file clerk. Her main story was the day some Butter Bar was trying to teach her how to color a map correctly. She was a school teacher at this point and, eventually, ...

Re: Chickamauga Cavalry Monuments

We've taken our horses to the Battlefield several times over the years as it's a great place to take a youngster get them away from home but in a relatively easy environment. There are two loops (one at 3+ miles and one just about 7) that are well kept. The Rangers keep the dirt bikes and mountain b...

12 Strong

Went and saw "12 Strong" last week. Gets my highest rating: GFF. It's based on the book War Horse which I think has been discussed before. The book is a good read. The movies is a good entertainment based upon the book. Some of my friends were expecting a horse movie set in a war. The film...

Re: The Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of US Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan

Saw the flick yesterday a.m. Rates a GFF (my three tier rating system also includes OK as a middle grade and SUX as the bottom tier). If you want to see a horse movie that takes place in a combat zone this isn't it. This is a rather traditional war flick that contains horses. Indeed it's much more i...

Looking forward to it, Kurt!

I'll be hanging around the U.S. Cavalry Assn. display, which we plan on co-locating with What Price Glory and Dehner Boots.

See you then!!!

Re: Columbus New Mexico Raid Centennial

Yup. Not taking any horses (it's a 2.5 day haul one way and five days of trailering for a one day event is just not going to happen).

Looks like they have quite a lineup of events and presentations. Looking forward to it!

Re: Guns and Lace Exhibition

I've got a friend, a superlative rider and historian, who does an SS Pazer crewman impression. We had a chat one day and I indicated that SS impressions really did give me some "heartburn." The history there is about as ugly as it gets. He agreed, but noted that if you're going to do any s...

Re: Prices at the Dawn of the Gasoline Age, Dusk of the Equi

We spent New Yeas with my BIL in Pensacola. Gas was running $1.80-$1.99, depending. Up and back along I-65/I-59 it ranged $1.70 plus or minus $.10. In Pensacola I saw something I've not seen in years: diesel was running 2-4 cents LESS than gasoline in a few locations. Along the interstate it was sti...
